Do you know where Fort Ritchie is? On Friday, February 9, Director and Curator of the Fort Ritchie History Museum Katy Self shares the history of the Fort as a Maryland National Guard post, World War II POW camp, and today’s history museum; learn about the many lives of the sight. Unraveling Your Roots: An Introduction to Genealogy
Join us for an introductory class on genealogy and the kinship Family Heritage Research Center led by two local genealogy experts! In the Miller House parlor, Carol Miller-Schultz will offer an introduction to genealogy research and resources, including her favorite genealogy resources. In kinship, staff genealogist Jean Conte will offer a tour of kinship, its resources, and our archives, along with her genealogy services. This will be followed by questions and workshop time in kinship. Guests will rotate between the two stations, each 45 mintues, and the event will feature light light hors d'oeuvres with cookies, coffee, and iced tea. Find out more »Shirley Temple Black: “From Child Star to Diplomat” by JoAnn Peterson
On March 22 at 6:00 PM, JoAnn Peterson of Frostburg, MD, a professional actor of stage and film, will be doing a first-person portrayal of Shirley Temple Black titled “From Child Star to Diplomat” at the Miller House. As a child star, Shirley Temple was the top box office draw from 1935-1938 in the world. She grew up to become a diplomat, author, and loving mother. The presentation is in the Chautauqua-style format, beginning with a monologue which JoAnn wrote based on extensive research using primary and secondary sources, articles, books, films, and interviews, followed by Q&A of Shirley, and then a Q&A of JoAnn after she breaks character. The earrings and blouse worn by JoAnn during her portrayal actually belonged to Shirley. The blouse was worn at her first reception in Prague as Ambassador to Czechoslovakia. JoAnn owns and will display Shirley’s iconic ensemble worn when she received the Screen Actor’s Guild’s Lifetime Achievement Award, purchased from Shirley’s estate. This is very appropriate since JoAnn’s portrayal is a tribute to the achievements of Shirley Temple Black’s whole life, not just her years as a child star. On Friday, September 13, join WCHS Board Member and Civil War Reenactor Sandy Andrews as he shares highlights from his handmade collection of flags. For fans of the popular PBS program “Who Do You Think You Are?” join genealogists Carol Miller-Schultz and Jean Conte for an exciting presentation as they dig up Mary Schurz’s fascinating ancestry, from her time in Williamsport, to her childhood and home of her ancestors. It will be an afternoon of food, drinks, and fascinating genealogical stories! Roots is a kinship Family Heritage Research Center fundraiser, which supports the ongoing preservation of the rich family histories of Washington County. kinship is Washington County's only dedicated genealogical research center. Join the WCHS Saturday, June 22, 5-9PM for our Ransom of Hagerstown Dinner-Auction Fundraiser! This fundraiser held at the Women’s Club of Hagerstown will commemorate the 160th Anniversary of the Ransom of Hagerstown. During the event, enjoy a cocktail hour featuring Stoney Creek Bluegrass Band, followed by dinner catered by Hicksville Barbecue. During dinner guests will hear an address delivered by keynote speaker Stephen Bockmiller, author of Follow the Money: The 1864 Confederate Ransom of Hagerstown, Maryland. Dinner will be followed by dessert, more music, and silent auction and raffle baskets winners. Help the WCHS save history with your ticket purchase, which supports our goal of raising $20,000. This amount symbolizes McCausland's original 1864 ransom demand. Your support helps us continue our efforts to preserve Washington County’s history through educational programming, exhibits, lectures, events, and more. Individual tickets are available at $50 for WCHS members and $65 for non-members. Join the Washington County Historical Society on June 29 for a Public History Day as we commemorate the 160th Anniversary of the Ransom of Hagerstown! This free event will take place from 10:00 AM to 4:00 PM with vendors and activities throughout the Miller House Museum and Garden. The day will kick off with a Mayoral proclamation by Mayor Tekesha Martinez at Town Hall! Be the first to see our new exhibit in the Miller House (second floor) that interprets the Ransom of Hagerstown for visitors, featuring WCHS artifacts! Refreshments, history books, and other gifts will also be available for sale inside. Outside at the Miller House Garden, guests can enjoy an art show by Antietam Gallery, local historical organizations, vendors, and more free family fun!

To commemorate the 160th Anniversary of the Ransom of Hagerstown, the WCHS will be offering a walking tour of Downtown Hagerstown as part of our our June 29, 2024, Public History Day. Stephen Bockmiller, author of Follow the Money: The 1864 Confederate Ransom of Hagerstown, Maryland, will lead guests through the streets of downtown Hagerstown, recounting historical events as they took place on July 6, 1864, when Brigadier General John McCausland and 1,500 Confederate soldiers entered Hagerstown and held the town ransom. The walking tour will cover a little under a mile of walking distance, roughly 7 blocks of downtown Hagerstown around Public Square, lasting 50 to 60 minutes.
