Culture & Cocktails: Archaeology of Western Maryland
Washington County Historical Society 135 W. Washington Street, HagerstownOn Friday, November 14, join us as Suzanne Trussell from the Allegany County Historical Society in Cumberland, MD, shares about her experience working with archaeology and anthropology projects in Western Maryland. This month’s cocktail is the Fireball Cider Bomb, a festive blend of Fireball cinnamon whiskey, apple cider, and grenadine. Doors open at 5:30 PM and light hors d'oeuvres will be served! Cannons & Caverns Fall Bus Tour
Explore Antietam Battlefield and Crystal Grottoes Caverns on Saturday, October 18th, as the Washington County Historical Society travels back in time to visit our historic landscape. WCHS Executive Director Andy Stout, together with WCHS staff, board members, and historical site guides, will guide our group for the day! The bus tour will meet at the JC Penney parking lot located on the East side of the Valley Mall in Hagerstown, MD. The group will depart from this location by bus at 9:00 AM. Guests should plan to arrive 15 minutes prior to departure. Our first stop of the day will be Antietam National Battlefield, site of the famous 1862 Civil War battle, located in the heart of Washington County, MD. Our tour will be led by noted Antietam Battlefield Guide, Dr. Thomas G Clemens . After our tour of Antietam, we'll enjoy complimentary box lunches. Following lunch, we will head to the Crystal Grottoes Caverns, where we'll dive deeper into Washington County's past. Crystal Grottoes was discovered in 1920 in the course of quarrying operations by a road construction crew trying to obtain gravel. It is the only public, commercial cave in the State of Maryland. Culture & Cocktails: The Two Emilie Lawrence Reeds of Blue Ridge Summit
Washington County Historical Society 135 W. Washington Street, HagerstownOn Friday, October 10, join genealogist Pam Anderson as she presents, "The Two Emilie Lawrence Reeds of Blue Ridge Summit." Celebrate Family History Month this October by attending this C&C with Pam Anderson of Anderson CoGen Collaborative Genealogy Services, as she presents on the lives of two women, both named Emilie Reed, who were connected to U.S. Army physician Dr. Walter Reed. Dr. Reed owned the historical Washington County home, Keewaydin, on Blue Ridge Summit. This month’s cocktail is the Tom Collins, a late-19th century gin-based drink.
